There was a fort constructed on this site
as early as 1742 and it was occupied in the
War of 1812 1815. In the War of the Rebellion
it was mounted with four guns which com-
manded the approaches to the outer harbor.
It is still the property of the U. S. Government.
The earthworks add much to the picturesque
appearance of Salem
