RICHARD WAGNER
Richard Wagner was born in Leipzig,
May 22, 1813. When he was
fifteen he became so inspired upon
hearing one of Beethoven's sym-
phonies he decided to become a
musician. He worked very hard
and finally won recognition through
the performance of his opera Rienzi.
Tannhauser, Lohengrin, and
Parsifal, which was his last work,
are among his more popular com-
positions. Wagner died Feb. 13, 1883.
GUISEPPE VERDI
Born in Italy, Oct. 10, 1813, Verdi
as a boy was indifferent to every-
thing except music. When only
ten, he was appointed to succeed his
teacher as organist. A musical
organization provided Verdi with
a scholarship for two years' study in
Milan. Eventually he became in
great demand as a composer and is
best remembered, perhaps, for his
much loved operas, Rigoletto,
III Trovatore and La Traviata. Verdi
died on Jan. 27, 1901.

PETER ILYITCH TSCHAIKOWSKY
Born in Russia, May 7, 1840,
Tschaikowsky, in early youth, did
not show obvious signs of musical
talent, although he studied with
excellent teachers. However, he
became disgusted with himself and
determined to study with real earnest-
ness and to make music his life work.
The results are well known and
among his many compositions,
perhaps the famous Sixth Symphony
and the Nut Cracker Suite are
best known. Tschaikowsky died Nov.
6, 1893.
EDVARD GRIEG
Grieg was born in Norway, June
15, 1843. His ancestry was Scotch.
on his father's side. He studied at
the Leipzig Conservatory but
throughout his life his interest was
constantly directed to the treasures
in Norwegian folk-music. Here he
found his great inspiration and
pursued it. Perhaps his most noted
composition is his incidental music
to Ibsen's "Peer Gynt." Some-
one has said that Grieg's music
"carries the fragrance of his native
pine woods into the concert room."
His death occurred Sept. 7, 1907.
