SPIRIT OF '76
This famous painting was made by
Archibald M. Willard, Wellington,
Ohio, who chose his father for
the central figure; a former
soldier for the fifer, and a 13-year
old boy for the drummer. The
painting, which now hangs in the
town hall at Marblehead, Mass.,
has long satisfied the idealism
of the American people and is
a moving appeal to public spirit.
It is viewed annually by thousands.
PAUL REVERE'S RIDE
Paul Revere, American patriot
(1735-1818) became the trusted
special messenger of the com-
mittee of safety and on the 18th
of April, 1775, began his famous
midnight ride referred to in
Longfellow's poem. After the
Revolution he became the first in
America to smelt copper ore and
to refine and roll copper into
sheets and bolts.
