THE MAYFLOWER
Sailing alone from Southampton,
England, Sept. 6, 1620, the
Mayflower, (180 tons burden)
with about 102 passengers, landed
at what is now Plymouth, Mass..
on the 11th of December and this
event is celebrated as Forefathers'
Day, on the 22nd of December.
The Pilgrims established the first
permanent colony in New England.
FIRST THANKSGIVING
After the first harvest of the
Massachusetts colonists in 1621,
the Governor sent four men hunt-
ing for fowl which served them
throughout a week of thanks-
giving and rejoicing to which
about a hundred friendly Indians
were invited. This was a harvest
festival held in the autumn and
from it has evolved our annual
Thanksgiving Day.
