LIBERTY BELL
Perhaps the most famous monu-
ment in the U. S., is Independence
Hall in Philadelphia where the
Declaration of Independence was
adopted July 4, 1776. It houses
the celebrated Liberty Bell, which
bears the inscription, "Proclaim
liberty through all the land unto
all the inhabitants thereof," and
which is supposed to have been
the first bell to announce the
adoption of the Declaration of
Independence.
STATUE OF LIBERTY
The Statue of Liberty, properly
"Liberty Enlightening the World,"
on Bedloe's Island, N. Y. harbor,
was conceived by Frederic A.
Bartholdi, Alsatian sculptor, who
built it in Paris during the 1870's
and early 1880's. A gift to the
United States from the people of
France, it was unveiled Oct. 26,
1886. The statue with its upraised
torch, standing 152 ft. above
the pedestal and 300 ft. above
sea level, forthwith became the
symbol of welcome to immi-
grating thousands.
