WASHINGTON CROSSING
THE DELAWARE
Crossing the Delaware, Dec. 25,
1776, in spite of pitchy darkness
and grinding ice, Washington
marched through a sleeting storm
nine miles to Trenton, surprising
and driving the Hessians to
surrender. Some 900 prisoners
were taken to the other side of
the river, and then Washington
crossed again to win another
victory at Princeton.
FIRST AMERICAN FLAG
When the 3rd Continental Congress
declared that "the national flag
of the United States shall be of
stars and stripes, red, white, and
blue," Mrs. Betsy Ross was chosen
to make the new cloth flag because
of her excellent skill with the
needle. On June 14, 1777 the
Continental Congress accepted the
emblem from the woman who first
formed it into a thing of beauty
and a joy forever.
