This institution, built on a rocky promontory
abutting the Missouri River, is one of the
largest prisons within a single enclosure in
the United States. Grey stone walls, 20 feet
high, surround 38/2 of the 80 acres comprising
the site. A $3,500,000 building program com-
pleted in 1939 greatly enlarged and modern-
ized the institution.
