In 1863 Colonel Thomas Baker settled with his
family near the Kern River which flowed out of
the High Sierras into the flatlands of central
California. The friendly Bakers fed travelers and
their animals without charge and word of this f
hospitality at Baker's field caused the growing
settlement to become known as Bakersfield
Designated County Seat in 1874, the commu-
nity eventually became the metropolis of the
Southern San Joaquin Valley.
