AERIAL VIEW OF MACKINAC ISLAND
"Michigan's Summer Capitol"
Rich in Indian legend and historical interest, a
large part of the Island is maintained by the State
of Michigan as a state park, and the summer home
of Michigan's governor is located here. The name
"Mackinac" was shortened from Michilimackinac, an
Indian name meaning "the great turtle," and the
Island was held sacred by the ancient northern
tribes.
