VALLECITO, Calaveras County, CALIFORNIA
The large bell was brought around the Horn from New York
and originally mounted on the limb of a large Oak tree.
It was used to call people to town meetings, as a fire
alarm, and to summon the miners to services on Sundays.
Eager for diversion, the miners would gather in great
numbers to listen to some itinerant preacher elaborate
on the scriptures, as soon as the benidiction was over
they would break up into small groups and begin playing
poker, monte, and blackjack, with frequent recourse to
their flasks.
