8. BIRD. OF PARADISE: Native of New Gui-
nea and nearby islands. The family is closely
related to that of the Crow. The plumage of the
male is wonderfully beautiful, and has led to the
killing of these Birds in great numbers. They
are noisy Birds and live in flocks near the tree
tops. Nests are loosely built of sticks. Berries,
seeds and insects are their food.
