PORTUGAL:
A KINGDOM OF SOUTH-WEST EUROPE, OCCUPYING THE WESTERN PART
OF THE SPANISH PENINSULA, AND AT ONE TIME THE GREATEST MARITIME
POWER IN THE WORLD. IT IS BOUNDED EAST AND NORTH BY SPAIN,
AND WEST AND SOUTH BY THE ATLANTIC. THE COUNTRY IS MOUNTAINOUS,
BUT THE VALLEYS ARE FERTILE AND THE CLIMATE MILD. THE VINE IS CUL-
TIVATED EXTENSIVELY AND PORT WINES LARGELY EXPORTED. PORTUGAL
WAS COLONIZED BY THE PHOENICIANS AT AN EARLY DATE. 200 B. C. THEY
WERE CONQUERED BY THE ROMANS, WHO WERE OVERTHROWN SIX CENTURIES
LATER BY THE VANDALS AND VISGOTHS. THE PRESENT PORTUGESE ARE A
MIXTURE OF THE OLD ROMAN STOCK AND THESE NORTHERN RACES. THE
LANGUAGE IS VERY LIKE THE SPANISH. OUR PICTURE REPRESENTS A YOUNG
COUPLE OF VIANNA IN THEIR PROVINCIAL COSTUME. THE SINGER COMPANY
HAVE NUMEROUS OFFICES IN PORTUGAL, AND SELL ANNUALLY MANY THOU-
SANDS OF THEIR MACHINES.
