Two Chinese Characters wers printed on each seal meaning "RYUKYUS" in English. This was the first instance of the sale of Christmas Seals EGREETINGS in the Ryukyus. With net profits derived from the sale and with the aid of the local Government, the T.B. Research Institute, the T.B. Sanatorium with 60 beds, and other required facilities, were constructed on the former premises of the military police barracks in the Ryukyus. The Institute and Sanatorium are now made available to the Government on a non-reimbursement basis. SHADO 1961 Ryukyus Christmas Seal Sotetsu (A Cycad) 1961-62 From 1953 to date, the Ryukyu Anti-Tuberculosis Association has been officially authorized each year by the National Tuberculosis Association to issue Christmas Seals of the genuine Ryukyuan type. This year, the Ryukyuan seals will be printed with a Cycal design painted by Mr. Seikan Omine, a member of the SHUNYO BIJUTSU KYOKAI (Shunyo Artisits' Society) in Japan. The Cycad design is symbolic of the strength and resolve of the Ryukyuan people because it is the Cycad plant which traditionally provided the Ryukyuans with sustenance when all other foods were destroyed by typhoon storms and other disasters. The Ryukyuan islands, spread across the Western Pacific, are periodi- cally hit by typhoons. In the old days these typhoons would cause such devastation that farmers would be threatened with famine. These ancient farmers turned for food to the sturdy cycad which grew thickly in the fields, hills, and mountains of the Ryukyus. They learned that the inside of the trunk and the cycad nuts were fit for food after due preparation. For months after a typhoon, these plants were used for food pending harvest of new crops. Thus we may say that the Cycad was a symbol of life to our ancestors. The painting of the Christmas Seal represents the cycads and Ie-Island, under the leaves, lying on the sea-line far off, which produce together the quite peaceful, tranquil and warm atmosphere. The cycad painted on it looks rustic and stout but inexpressibly beautiful with spreading leaves. The leaves of the cycad are indispensable for Christmas decoration. In the last year, the net profits derived from the sale of Christmas Seals were earmarked for medical examination, from the veiwpoint of T.B. prevention, for a little less than 30,000 persons; for orientation for Xray operators; for the dissemination of knowledge on T.B. prevention by means of publishing pamphlets and other prints; and for consolation for T.B. patients. This year, 3,500,000 sheets of the Christmas Seals will be issued. RYUKYUS ANTI-T.B.
