This property first owned by Garrett Van Velson. House built prior to Revolutionary War (by Thomas
Savage); made of black cypress cut from off his own plantation; sold by his daughter to Colonel William
Washington, 1786; owned by different members of the Washington family till 1856. From the steps of this
house the widow of Col. Washington presented to the W. L. I., of Charleston, S. C., the famous Eutaw flag,
April 19th, 1827. During the occupancy of Charleston by troops, 1865, this house was used by Union officers,
