BOEING 727 TRIJET
The Boeing 727, which first entered commercial
service in 1964, is the most widely purchased jet
airliner in the world. The Advanced 727, latest version
of the trijet, weighs 191,000 pounds (96 600 kg) and
can carry up to 189 passengers at speeds of 605 miles
an hour (965 km/h). The first 727 flew on February 9,
1963, and the airplanes started service one year later.
The 727-200, which began coming off Boeing's
assembly line in mid-1967, is 20 feet longer than the
original trijet. Built for a wide market in the 1960's,
the constantly improved 727 keeps growing in popu-
larity among the world's airlines and air passengers.
Production of the 727 will continue at least through
the 1970's. The Advanced 727 has a wingspan of
108 feet (32,91 m), a length of 153 feet 2 inches
(46,69 m), and a height, at the T-tail, of 34 feet
(10,36 m).
