CATALINA ISLAND, CALIFORNIA
Known to the Catalina Indians as "The Bay of the Seven Moons" and to early fishermen
as "Timm's Landing," Avalon did not receive its present name until 1887.
Etta Whitney, the sister-in-law of George Shatto, who owned Catalina in the late 1800s,
gave Avalon its name. Mrs. Whitney chose the name from Tennyson's poem, "Idylls of the
King," where, as the King lay dying, he said he was going to "...the Island Valley of
Avilion, where falls not hail, or rain, or any snow, nor ever wind blows loudly; but it lies
deep-meadowed, happy, fair with orchard lawns and bowery hollows crown'd with sum-
mer seas, where I will heal me of my grievous wound."
The Island Valley of Avalon is home to approximately 2,000 residents. During the sum-
mer season, 5,000 people live in Avalon and, on a busy weekend, up to 10,000 people
may be found in the Avalon area.
The City of Avalon was incorporated in 1913, encompassing an area slightly larger
than one square mile. Avalon has its own fire department, and electric power is supplied
by Southern California Edison's diesel driven generators located at Pebbly Beach.
