BOB HARKEY
Bob Harkey, a curly-haired, good-natured veteran of a dec-
ade of USAC racing, appears to improve with age. After
making the field for the Indianapolis 500 in his rookie year
of 1964 and finishing eighth, he didn't make it again until
1971. But he has made the select list of 33 starters in two
out of the last three years. He also has been a starter in all
three of the Schaefer 500's at Pocono and in the inaugural
California 500 at Ontario in 1970. He placed 29th in this
year's Indianapolis race, completing only 12 laps before
bowing an engine. At Pocono, Harkey was 15th. He started
his racing career in 1949. He also runs sprint cars and
midgets occasionally and has one career midget feature
victory to his credit.
