PULL THE SECOND LEVER
THE REPUBLICAN PLATFORM FOR 1957
1. TAXES
Efficiency and economy will save tax dollars.
We deplore the camouflage proposal to raise assessments to provide more
revenue. Substitution of sound business management for a helter-skelter finance
program can relieve the tax burden.
2. SCHOOLS
We firmly believe in providing adequate facilities to prevent double sessions,
basement classrooms and overcrowded conditions, but we believe in doing so by
proper planning and by building economical, efficient schools, with the Common
Council exercising its right and duty to hold the reins on fantastic tax-consuming
non-essentials.
3. ROADS
The Republican Party pledges itself to an effective permanent road paving
program.
4. PLANNING
We advocate the consolidation of the Planning and Zoning Commissions to
eliminate the confusions and contradictions and better plan for the orderly growth
of our city.
5. COMMON COUNCIL
Our pledge is to return dignity to the Common Council, to guarantee every
member his privilege of free thought and free speech, with no dictatorship from
the chief executive or control by party bosses. The Republican Council will
exercise its inherent right to legislate in the best interests of the City.
6. HARBOR DEVELOPMENT
We propose the appointment of a Harbor Commission consisting of ex-
perienced boatmen and businessmen to plan for the development of sorely needed
public marinas.
7. RECREATION
We will complete the development and expansion of neglected parks and
playgrounds, intensify public use of city-owned recreational facilities, and investi-
gate future park possibilities.
8. URBAN DEVELOPMENT
The Republican administration will effect a comprehensive plan for urban
development and completion of redevelopment projects so long delayed.
9. SMOKE CONTROL
We propose effective enforcement and revitalization of the Smoke Control
ordinance to protect our homes and our natural resources. We believe in enforce-
ment of smoke control against any offender and will start by cleaning up our own
mess in municipal incineration.
10. JUVENILE DELINQUENCY
We propose the appointment of a carefully selected Youth Commission to
guard against the spread of juvenile delinquency by development and expansion
of social, welfare and recreation programs.
