On May 8, 1607, the first colonists came to the mouth
of the Appomattox River, but it was not until 1646, when
Governor Berkeley built Fort Henry on the site where the
city now stands, that Petersburg began. Nearby lived
Pocahontas, Virginia's most romantic figure. By the time of
the Revolution, Petersburg had become a flourishing town.
