The Battle Monument at Old Bennington, Vermont, is a magnificent shaft of gray-blue dolomite, thirty seven feet square at the base and the metal star at the top, 306 feet 4½ inches high. The entrance hall, twenty square and thirty-nine feet high, is a landing for the stairs. Between the entrance hall and grand Lookout floor four flights with 412 steps. The architect was I. Phillip Rinn of Boston. The corner stone was laid on August 16, 1887. The monument was dedicated on August 19, 1891. It commemorates the Battle of Bennington, Fought on August 16, 1777. The cost of the monument was $112,000.00. The highest Battle Monument in the world.
