New Orleans, the "Gateway to the great Miss-
issippi Valley," is older than the U. S. being
laid out in 1718 by Bienville, a Frenchman. It
is a picturesque and interesting city due to the
survival of many of the buildings, manners and
customs of its original French and Spanish in-
habitants. Best known, is the colorful and
elaborate Mardi Gras Festival.
