The rich, well drained land of Wilson County early brought an
influx of farming folk behind their oxen and farm wagons but the
town itself only had its beginning in 1849. They chose a site well
as no major rivers threatened flood hazards and tall timber was
readily available for constructing their dwellings and businesses.
Wilson's tobacco auction market was established on September
3, 1890, when the first basket was sold for 50¢ per pound. Prior
to this time, most of the crop had been purchased by traveling
buyers who contacted the growers on the farm. Tobacco and
Wilson are synonymous — the town developed into a city, the
city developed into the world's largest bright leaf tobacco
market, always the leader year after year.
