G.C.-1--GREETINGS FROM GRAND CANYON,
ARIZONA
The story of the Canyon coming to civilized
man, begins with its discovery in 1540 by
Don Garcia Lopez de Cardenas and twelve
companions. Sent out by Coronada via the
Hopi villages, they secured guides to direct
them as the Hopi had declared " to a great
river within a deep canyon, by the side of
which lived a race of giants." They found
the banks so high and rugged that it was im-
possible to reach the water. They marched
several days along the rim searching for an
opening by which they might descend to the
stream but there seemed to be one continuous
wall and the river appeared as a silver
thread below.
