Statue of Old Bet, first circus elephant, stands
Elephant Hotel, now the Town Hall.
Bailey bought Old Bet between 1805 &
1810 and exhibited for gain in the first traveling
menagerie in America, ancestor of today's Big Top.
The Hotel was completed in 1825 and Statue mounted
in 1827 two grateful monuments of appreciation
from Mr. Bailey to Old Bet. There is a circus museum
inside the Hotel.
