Birthplace of the American Circus. Statue of Old Bet, first circus elephant, stands outside the Elephant Hotel, now the Town Hall. Hockoliah Bailey bought Old Bet between 1805 and 1810 and exhibited for gain in the first traveling menaggerie in America, ancestor of today's Big Top. The Hotel was completed in 1825. There is a circus museum inside the hotel
