Juan Bautista de Anza, who opened the route across the Colorado Desert into California in 1774-75, entered the San Jacinto Mountains and camped at the entrance to Borrego Valley. Borrego (Sp., Borrego, yearling lamb) is a state park and part of the Anza State Park system. Some think that the lost Peg-leg Mine is in or near the valley. It seems as if there are more lost mines than mines that were ever found in the first place. A number of peg-legs has been found on the desert, the finders are sure that they are on the trail of the old rascal Peg-leg Smith. These look very much like the peg-legs made by Harry Oliver, "The Old Mirage Salesman" who planted these works of art on the desert. . . . M. P. |
