One man - Simon Rodia - created the Towers without aid in 33 intensely purposeful years. He worked with no drawing-board designs, machine equipment, or scaffolding. The structures were literally "built in the air", using the simple tools of a tile-setter, together with window washer's belt and buckle. In gathering materials, Simon collected more than 70,000 sea shells, dismantled pipe structures and steel bed frames. The Towers fall into no strict category, however, critics all over the world have given them unqualified response. |
