One man - Simon Rodia - created the Towers without aid in 33 intensely purposeful years. He worked with no drawing-board designs, machine equipment or scaffolding. The structures were literally "built in the air", using the simple tools of a tile-setter, along with window-washer's belt and buckle. In gathering materials, Simon collected more than 70,000 sea shells, dismantled pipe structures and steel bed frames. |
