Only a few days' sail from Australia's eastern ports, the island
of New Caledonia, valued French possesion, drowses in the hot
Pacific sunshine. Originally named Belade, it was discovered by
the famed Capt. Cook in 1774. In later years traders found the
island rich in sandalwood, and France took formal possession
in 1853. For a while, the little island became a penal settlement
for France. Today it is a military stronghold.
