STATE CAPITOL
Montgomery, Alabama
The famous Capitol Building of Alabama in Mont-
gomery, was built in 1851, after the original
building was destroyed by fire. The front portico
was the scene of the swearing in of Jefferson
Davis as President of the Confederate States of
America. Twin spiral staircases, still in daily use,
arch upward three floors, and have no visible
means of support. They are considered to be a
major architectural accomplishment.
