CAYUCOS, CALIFORNIA
Cayuco is a nautical term applied to a small fishing
boat which is like a canoe and often made of skins. In
1842, Rancho Moro y Cayucos was granted to Martin
Olivera. It was later owned by James Mckinley, a
Scotch sailer who later sold it in smaller tracts for
dairy farms. In 1867 a weekly stage served the coast
from San Luis Obispo to San Simeon. This year James
Cass came to the area (Picture of his home on card No.
C-333). He built a warf here in 1870, soon after a
store and warehouse. The town was laid out in 1875,
soon after a stage made a weekly trip from San Miguel
to the town to meet the weekly boat at the wharf. The
small pier is at the site of the wharf built by Captain
