Millions of immigrants will recognize this
photograph illustrating their first introduc-
tion to the soil of the great Republic. Here
in former days all immigrants were landed
amid scenes of confusion and a Babel of
tongues that will long be remembered.
Now the scene has changed and an order-
ly and less confusing disposal of the immi-
grants is
is made at Ellis Island and the
Barge Office; and Castle Garden, the walls
of which were mute witnesses of the great
triumphal entry of Jenny Lind, and the re-
ception of so many great visitors, now has
assumed the care of the inhabitants of the
deep and does duty as a public Aquarium,
where millions are instructed and amused
annually.
