Back:
The U.S. S. Harrisburg
which brought me home was launched in
1888 as the "City of Paris". 560 feet long, 62
feet wide, with a displacement of 10,060 tons,
19,000 horsepower and a speed of 19 knots,
the first ship to be fitted with twin screws,
she was easily the Queen of the Ocean' and
broke the world's record by crossing the
Atlantic from Queenstown to New York in
5 days and 12 hours. From 1893 to 1898 she
served in the U. S. Merchant Marine as the
'Paris' and during the Spanish American War
as the auxiliary cruiser 'Yale'. Going back to
the American Line for mail and passenger
service the 'Philadelphia' plied between South-
ampton and New York until again commis-
sioned by the U. S. as the 'Harrisburg' on
May 29, 1918, since which time she has been
successfully eluding submarines and bringing
back her share of soldiers.
