The U.S. S. Don Juan de Austria, use
training ship for the Michigan Naval Brigade, lies
at anchor in the Detroit river when not in use by the
reserves on a cruise. She was originally a Spanish,
gun boat and was built in 1880 She was one of
the Spanish ships sunk by Admiral Dewey in the
battle of Manilla Bay, and was raised by the
United States government and rebuilt at Hong
Kong, China. She carries eight six-pound and four
one-pound rifles.
