From the 14,408-foot Mt. Rainier to the salt water city of Tacoma, Washington,
wends the beautiful Puyallup Valley in which towns of Orting, Sumner and Puyallup are
located. It is here that nature seems to test out her early hopes for spring before removing
the rest of the Northern hemisphere from its wintry cloak.
The curious mingling of cold mountain drafts and salt water breezes, coupled
with a rich, well drained soil make the Puyallup Valley an ideal bulb raising region. Here
old world bulb growers cooperate with local bulb men to raise over one thousand acres
of golden daffodils, plus acre upon acre of tulips and other bulbs. Last year more than
fifty million daffodil bulbs were harvested to supply the eastern florists with bulbs which
send up their golden flowers weeks ahead of those from any other section of the world.
Since 1936, Tacoma, Washington, presents the now famous Puyallup Valley
Daffodil Festival each spring. During the festival gorgeous floats with thousands of
daffodils on each, move slowly through the city streets to climax a week of spring fever.
A show of over five hundred different varieties of daffodils is a highlight for the flower
fancier.
