Early in January 1777 scouting parties were
ordered up the shores of Lake Champlain
to guard against a surprise attack across the
ice. This picture shows a typical Massa-
chusetts soldier from the 6th Continental
Infantry known as Colonel Asa Whitcomb's
"Rangers." He wears a blue seaman's
jacket and the high cocked seaman's hat
of the period, with buckskin leggings and
moccasins. He carries a "committee of safety"
musket and a light pack with blanket and
rations for three days as prescribed in gen-
eral orders of 7th January, 1777.

The 2nd Canadian Regiment was raised
at large in 1776. Most of the men came from
Canada and Pennsylvania. The regiment was
fully and well equipped and was popularly
known as "Congress's Own." The light com-
pany men wore black leather caps as shown
in the background. The drummer wears the
colors of the regiment, (brown and white)
with facings reversed as was the custom
for drums and fifes of that period. The Regi-
mental Cipher "C. O. R." and the motto ' Pro
Aris et Focis" appear on the drum shell,
the leather caps, and the canteens.
