THE HALLS, PRINCETON UNIVERSITY, PRINCETON,
N. J.-The American Whig Society, whose founders inclu-
ded James Madison, Hugh Brackenridge and Philip Fren-
eau, and the Cliosophic Society, founded by William
Paterson, Oliver Ellsworth, and Luther Martin, among
others, are the oldest college literary and debating soci-
eties in America. Amalgamated in 1929, with head-
quarters in the building of the American Whig Society,
they trace their origin back to 1765. The present marble
buildings of the Halls, (Clio on the left) date from
1893.
