This is a specimen of the largest
shell in the world... The Giant Clam
which lives on the coral reefs of the
South Pacific ... Pearl divers stepping
on the well-camouflaged mollusk have
been instantly trapped by the animal
snapping shut its great shell, vise-like,
and held thusly until drowned.
This specimen measures:
Length 42"-Width 30" - Depth 29"
This specimen was brought out of
the sea from an island in the South
Pacific, and took 3 days to loosen from
the coral bed where it had grown
It was sent to Honolulu, then shipped
to California, and on to Ocean Grove,
N. J.
This shell is one of the largest ever
to be shipped in to the United States.
