The Lowell Observatory 24-inch refracting telescope, built
by Alvan Clark and Sons in 1896, is still in regular use at
Flagstaff, Arizona for planetary studies. With this telescope,
beginning in 1913, V. M. Slipher obtained the first observa-
tional evidence of the expansion of the universe.
