THE JOCKEY CLUB OF ME
known also as La Casa de los Azulejos - house of the tiles,
is a line example of the ancient casas señoriales, the sig-
norial houses of the old nobility; it is one of the "show
houses of the capital and is a notable architectural
feature. It was erected early in 1800 by Don Diego
Saurez de Peredo, the extravagant son of the Count of
the Valley of Oaxaca-a direct descendant of Hernan
Cortés. Tiles were then very costly and the young man
acquired local fame for his vast expenditure. A fine
interior stairway in the Moorish style is a noteworthy
feature. The edifice houses the most ultra fashionable
of the city clubs.
