Odessa, Texas,
The accepted birth of the city of Odessa
occurred in July 1881 with the building of the
Texas & Pacific Railroad. The railroad laborers
were from Russia and the wide, flat prairie
country reminded them of their homeland and
they cailed this temporary camping place
Odessa, after their own Odessà , Russia. As
was later discovered, Odessa is located in the
heart of an ancient sea called the Permian
Basin This Permian Basin area is the heart
of the Oil "Black Gold" country and has often
been referred to. in our history books as the
Staked Plains Area.
