HUMMING-BIRDS.
Tamily-Trochilide; Order Fnsessores; Tribe Tenuirastres.
AZURE CROWN,-Cyanomyia Francia
GOLDEN TAIL,-Chrysuronia Chrysura.
HE Azure Crown is the "Oiseau-mouche à tête d'azur'
IS of the French naturalist, Lesson. He is found in
Mexico, Central America, Columbia, and Peru, always
habiting the highlands, where the air is temperate, and never
frequenting the sultry plains near the coast of the Pacific.
is total length is nearly four inches.
He has a straight bill, rather broad at the base, and of a clear
yellow, except the tip, which is black; the tarsi, or ankle-joints,
are very short; a hood or cowl, of glittering metallic blue, covers
the crown of his head.
The upper parts of the body are of a brilliant golden-green,
and the under, of a chaste and clear white; the wings are large,
equalling the tail in length, and of a purplish brown; and the
tail consists of broad, strong feathers, of a bronzy-green.
The Golden Tail is a native of the dense, luxuriant forests
and savannas of Brazil; and is also found on the western coast
of South America, in Peru and Bolivia. He is a lively, rest-
less bird, very pugnacious, and dazzlingly quick in all his
notions..
The crown of the head of this brilliant bird is of a rich dark
blue, slightly tinged with green. The upper surface of his body
and the wing-coverts are of a bright green, shaded-if we may
use the expression with gold; the under tail-coverts are of a
grayish hue, with a slight flash of gold; the thighs are white as
snow; the tail has a warm golden lustre; and the whole under
surface of the body is of a shining green, like young meadow-
grass. So delicate a creature, if known to the poets of Greece,
would assuredly have been celebrated in song, and made the
subject of a legen.d.
