WEST NYACK, NEW YORK
Pan Am was first carrier to put 747 in service in January 1970.
The huge 747 offers passengers a cabin 9 feet wider than the
707 with a flat ceiling high all the way across so even pas-
sengers by windows can stand straight up. Baggage handling
is speeded up by utilizing containers contoured to dimensions
of the lower compartments. Up to 50,000 gallons of jet fuel.
feed engines with thrust of 45,000 lbs., or 21/2 times that of
707. Compared to the 707, the 747 is 231' long vs. 153'; wing-
span is 196' vs. 146'.
