Where Joseph Smith, the Mormon prophet, and his brother, Hyrum, were killed by an angry mob on June 27, 1844. The Hancock County Jail at Carthage, Illinois was constructed of native yellow limestone 1839-1841 at a cost of $4,105. The building is owned and maintained by the Church of Jesus of Latter Day Saints, with headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah. |
