Settled in 1818-19 by trappers and hunters from South Carolina, Virginia and Kentucky, and named the County Seat of Sangaman County in 1823. Selected as the State Capital in 1837 through the efforts of Abraham Lincoln and eight other members of the Illinois Legislature, Known, because they were all over six feet in height as the "Long Nine." The capital was then in Vandalia. The State Legislature first assembled ion Springfield in 1839. Springfield is widely known as the home and final resting place of Abraham Lincoln. |
