220165. The Nation, State and City joined in
paying the last tribute to the seventeen marines
and sailors who lost their lives at the Battle of Vera
Cruz. The bodies arrived aboard the funeral ship
"Montana" May 11th, 1914, and were con-
veyed to the New York Navy Yard, where the sim-
ple but impressive funeral services were held.
Mayor Mitchell placed a wreath on the casket of
each of the heroes.
