a most distinguished military career, serving his
King and country in every part of the world.
Age and time have not been able to cool his
ardour, and at 82 he takes a guiding hand in the
greatest war in which England has ever been
engaged.
In Memoriam.
Boulogne, Nov. 14th, 1914.
HE DIED AS HE LIVED-ON DUTY.
"In the name of His Majesty's Army serving in
France, I wish to be allowed to convey to you and
your family our heartfelt sympathy. Your grief is
shared by us who mourn the loss of a much-loved
Chief. As he was called it seems a fitter ending to
the life of so great a soldier that he should have
passed away in the midst of the troops he loved so
well and within the sound of the guns."
Message sent to Countess Roberts
by Field-Marshal Sir John French.
