Wild Duck Shooting begins on August 1st and ends
March 1st. On the Norfolk Broads and such-like places,
spaniels are employed to flush the birds, sportsmen being
concealed at various points in the rushes.

Partridge Shooting begins September 1st and ends
February 1st. It is the present fashion to shoot at driven
birds, a fine sport, and one requiring the most skilful marks-
manship. Some, however, still cling to the delightful
method of shooting over dogs as depicted in the picture on
this card.

Ferreting for Rabbits is a pleasant sport if the rabbits
"bolt," but somewhat tedious, particularly on a cold day,
if the ferret lies up and has to be dug out. To avoid this
trouble it is well to employ half a dozen ferrets. When the
rabbits bolt freely from their burrows the shooting is lively
and by no means easy.

Blackcock Shooting begins August 20th and ends
December 10th. The blackcock, heath-fowl, or black
grouse is abundant in the North of England and Scotland,
and is more particularly to be found where there are bogs
and morasses with rank herbage. It also visits cornfields
and stubble to feed on corn.

Grouse Shooting begins August 12th and ends
December 10th. Driving is the most common method
employed in shooting this bird. Perthshire is the chief
grouse-shooting region, but grouse occur in every Scottish
county and in the North of England.

Pheasant Shooting begins on October 1st and ends.
February 1st. Beaters are nearly always employed to
drive the birds from the woods outside which the Guns"
are placed. The uninitiated are apt to consider pheasant
shooting an easy matter, but to bring down the
"rocketers," flying over the tall trees requires a consider-
able amount of skill.
